Newfoundland Backpacking Trips

Long Range Traverse, Gros Morne National Park

Caribou in Long Range Mountains, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador, canada Backpack deep into the wilderness of Gros Morne National Park! In addition to an experience in self-reliance, character building, and physical challenge you will see a dramatic mountain landscape of glacier carved fjords, lush valleys, numerous streams and ponds, and arctic alpine barrens. Woodland caribou, moose, rock ptarmigan, Arctic hare, black bear, and Arctic plants thrive in this environment. Experienced and knowledgeable local guides lead our wilderness adventures and take time to describe the unique ecology of the region. Wilderness comforts include great backpacking food and quality camping equipment.

Day 1: Pick up in Deer Lake and transfer to Gros Morne National Park for a trip briefing and orientation. Overnight in Norris Point.

Day 2: Depart for Western Brook Pond Fjord. Our route to the Arctic alpine winds up through lush boreal forest hemmed in by towering fjord walls. The view from the top is stunning - huge waterfalls tumbling off sheer granite cliffs into the deep blue fjord waters over 800m below!

Day 3-4: Once on the high country, the barren expanses are filled with bogs, ponds, streams and brightly coloured flowers. Moose are often sighted in the forested valleys. Side hikes to Baker's Brook Pond fjord and Ten Mile Pond fjord capture the enormity of the carving action of the glaciers that produced this dramatic landscape.

Day 5: Gros Morne Mountain comes into view. On numerous rock outcrops, clusters of woodland caribou stand motionless catching the summer breeze. We finish the trek with a side hike to enjoy the view from the top of Gros Morne Mountain.

Day 6: Return to Deer Lake.
